I keep on hearing the word Armageddon beyond its use in the Bible --it’s become a common word. What does the Bible Armageddon mean?
In the Bible the word Armageddon is only mentioned once in Revelation 16:16: “And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon.” It means “Mount of Megiddo” and Megiddo is a place where many battles were fought in Old Testament times. The Bible’s use of Armageddon therefore is considered to be symbolic of a final battle and is often thought to portray the end of the world. Yes, but not the end of the earth, but the end of the present social order: Ecclesiastes 1:4 “One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever.”
The Bible Armageddon means great trouble and perplexity among all people. It will be the end of a world (arrangement) of selfishness, greed and evil. It is a change of the order. A new world order will be completely put in place by God. This will be the answer of our Lord’s prayer "Thy Kingdom Come, Thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven." Now men realize this present order cannot continue with their being no peace in sight under the present institutions of this world. The Bible Armageddon then is a period of time when the present corrupt and fallen arrangements and problems come to a climax. A real crisis! Luke 21:25,26 “And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; Men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.”
We may be reassured that if it has been prophesied in God’s Word that there will be great calamities, we may also be assured that the promised time of peace and harmony and love on earth will also come as prophesied in many of the books of the Bible.
The Bible Armageddon is really a culmination of man’s own self defeating purposes and plans. Click on the link below for a free booklet on this topic.
